February 20, 2019: The Rural Municipality of Belfast announced during the Council meeting of Wednesday, February 20, 2019 that Mayor Jill Walsh provided them with an email on February 18, 2019 announcing her resignation from Council.
In Mayor Walsh’s email, she noted that with regret, she decided to resign due to the position she accepted as the new Chief Administrative Officer of the Town of Three Rivers, and that the CAO of the Town of Three Rivers opportunity was not foreseen at the time, when she allowed her name to stand for Mayor.
In her email, Mayor Walsh stated: “I have been honoured and humbled by the encouragement I have received from many citizens of Belfast, and the cooperative, business-like attitude of the Council has been wonderful. You have a strong Council in place, and I know the good work will continue.”
During the February 20, 2019 Council meeting, the CAO of the Rural Municipality of Belfast (Bob Brooks), noted that the Municipality will have six (6) months to hold a Bi-election and put a new Mayor in place. “The Municipal Government Act requires a Bi-election; it cannot be an appointment, due to the fact the we are so early in our four-year term.”
The CAO will work closely with Municipal Affairs to establish the election calendar and process, and will make Council and the public aware in the coming months.
